Hueytown schools are well served as a part of the Jefferson County
School System, the largest public system in the State of
Alabama. Excellence in Education
There are three elementary schools that feed into the Hueytown school
system with Hueytown Elementary by far the largest. Our schools have
enjoyed many honors, but one of our most recent was a visit by Mrs.
Laura Bush, wife of President George Bush as she toured the country
promoting reading. North Highland Elementary and Concord Elementary
are two smaller neighborhood schools with outstanding reputations for
exemplary work in education.
Hueytown Middle School is boasting of many new features that have
been recently remodeled. A beautiful new competition gym is scheduled
to be installed the summer of 2006. Our award winning bands and choirs
are complimented by our outstanding sports teams. Hueytown Middle School
Band scored all Superior ratings at a recent State competition, only
one of two middle schools statewide to do so. Football and baseball
championships are almost routine at Hueytown Middle School. This year,
the girl’s County championship in was added to the trophy case. Girl’s softball and tennis teams are outstanding as well.
Our high school is again ranked as 6A and is continuing to grow. It
provides for the needs of all students ranging from advanced placement
and honors classes to auto mechanics as well as cosmetology.
Hueytown High School is the home of the Golden Gophers. This unusual
mascot has its own story. Football was introduced to Hueytown high
school in the 1921, the same year the University of Minnesota was selected
as National football champions. Hueytown is proud of this one-of-a-kind
mascot! According to a December 13, 1977 Birmingham News article, “Hueytown, for instance, must be the only team in the state with such a woodsy animal as its mascot. (They) picked up that nickname for its athletic teams because of Minnesota’s success on the gridiron.” Like Minnesota, Hueytown gridiron ferocity is legendary.
Hueytown sports have provided the 2005 State 5A Ladies Softball champions
who are again in line to compete for the 2006 championship. Our baseball
teams have earned a number of County championships over recent years.
Our music department is second to none. The concert band has earned
Superior ratings in all areas and our Chorus will be performing in
Carnegie Hall this spring.
Also a number of private schools and kindergartens, church schools
and facilities for home schooling are available to Hueytown
families. The Hueytown School system is an excellent program and will
continue to serve Hueytown families for years to come.
